Recombinant glycoproteins produced in cell culture frequently lack complete glycosylation.

Incompletely glycosylated proteins may be cleared more rapidly from the body or have inferior drug properties. Incomplete glycosylation can also result in lower manufacturing yields. Conventional approaches to improving glycosylation, such as choice of cell type, cell or protein re-engineering, culture/media optimization, and removal of unwanted glycoforms, are time consuming and may not result in the desired level of glycosylation.
GlycoAdvance is Neose’s technology for using soluble recombinant glycosyltransferases as reagents in a manufacturing process to add carbohydrates to proteins after they have been expressed from the production cell lines.

Neose uses genetic engineering to modify, clone and express glycosyltransferases so that they work efficiently as bioprocess reagents. These enzymes transfer simple sugar units one-by-one to extend an existing carbohydrate chain of a glycoprotein. This efficient process is flexible in that multiple glycosyltransferases are available depending on glycosylation requirements of the glycoprotein.
